Tragically, the Kariakoo market in Dar is barely mentioned in the guidebooks. But, you shouldn’t consider missing it; unless, you’re claustrophobic.
Chris and I have developed a habit of eating meals procured from open-air markets. This strategy works well in villages, towns and even smaller cities. But, we were unprepared for Tanzania’s famous marketplace district!
Kariakoo is a few square kilometres of shops surrounding a multi-story market structure that I can only best describe as a stadium! This stadium extends underground, where everything from produce to bicycles are haggled over.
And, every single thoroughfare and alleyway is jam packed with moving bodies.
It was hard work, just to find some street food. We ended up eating in an restaurant whose patrons exclusively seemed to be nearby shopkeepers. And, afterward, rewarded ourselves with our first ice-cream in months.
